What is Superannuation?
The primary aim of a superannuation fund is to provide a benefit on retirement of the member. Superannuation plays an important role in the Government’s retirement income policy. With the ageing of the population the Government is keen to encourage greater self provision and superannuation is seen as a suitable vehicle for retirement savings. The Government aims to increase savings by offering tax assistance to superannuation savings. Income earned within superannuation is taxed at 15% and capital gains are generally taxed at 10%. Another benefit of having funds invested in superannuation is the ability to convert it to an allocated pension at retirement. Investment returns within allocated pensions are free of capital gains and earnings tax. Most or all of your income from an allocated pension will be paid to you tax-free. A tax effective structure such as an allocated pension can only be set up using superannuation money.
