The Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP) was established on 1 January 1849. Within 10 years of it opening its first office on Sydney, it had established a presence in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In January 1998, 149 years to the day after it began operations, AMP officially demutualised. In June of 1998, AMP Limited was listed on the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges and AMP shares were made available to the public.
